Blog Short: Airbnb and Cleaning Fees
Updated: Jan 14, 2023
Pay your cleaning fee, oh and while you are at it, can you sweep the floors and rake the yard before you head out?
The popular conversation floating around cleaning fees and cleaning responsibilities has been interesting to watch. Interesting to say the least. From a host's perspective, we have tried to find a good balance. We have recently removed our cleaning fees for a more transparent pricing model but in doing so raised our nightly rate. This is not to gain profit; it is correlated to the hourly rate we pay the cleaning team.
To give you an idea, Bear's Den can take 3-4 hours and Cabin in the Sky 5-7 hours to clean. We don't make money on cleaning and this past year we have lost money in the cleaning department. We have amazing cleaners and our priority is to keep them happy which in return improves the experience for our guests.
As for guest responsibilities, we ask three things from guests for the checkout process - start the dishwasher, consolidate laundry on bathroom floors, and place garbage in receptacles within the cabins. Are these a fair asks? Let us know what you think.
Our thoughts on our checkout process:
1) Start the dishwasher - the dishwasher can take a long time. It helps reduce cleaning costs by starting it up early. However, if guests miss this, we are not crumbling into the fetal position or charging guests extra. It is all good.
2) Consolidate laundry - we stole this from green hotels asking for guests to consolidate laundry for it to be easier to understand what was used. Note, our cabins have multiple rooms and beds, some that are not all used.
3) Place garbage in receptacles - we are not asking for guests to take out the garbage, only to make sure if you eat a candy bar over the sink, that you put the wrapper in the kitchen garbage.
